Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Review: A High Price For Revenge
Early access for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign is underway, with critics praising a return to linear, cinematic storytelling after the experimental shifts of previous entries.

Digital pre-order customers now have early access to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's single-player campaign, offering an early look at the conclusion of the rebooted subseries. Spanning 16 missions across South Korea, North Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai, the campaign marks a deliberate shift away from recent experimental formats back to traditional military storytelling.
Critical reception has leaned positive, largely praising the return to tightly paced, linear mission design. GameSpot awarded the campaign an 8/10, concluding that it succeeds by leaning into classic, cinematic set pieces instead of the open-combat mechanics featured in Modern Warfare 3. The narrative alternates between Task Force 141's Captain John Price and South Korean soldier Private Park Hyun Jun during an escalating military invasion of South Korea by North Korea.
Reactions to the conclusion are more divided. GameSpot reviewer S.E. Doster called it the series' best campaign since Modern Warfare 2019, but PC Gamer argued the plot felt rushed and played out 'like a sprint to be done with it all.' Playtime estimates also vary: GameSpot clocked a normal-difficulty run at about 8 hours, whereas walkthrough guides place standard playthroughs at 6 to 7 hours.
Completing missions awards 16 campaign bonuses, including 8 playable Operators (Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West, and Park), 5 XP tokens, and cosmetic customization items. These rewards remain unavailable during early access and cannot be accessed until the full worldwide release on October 23, 2026.
The campaign contains just one open-world mission, 'Stranded,' which GameSpot noted performed far better than the open-combat missions in the previous installment. GameSpot and other critics still cited brief, anticlimactic final boss encounters and a lack of mechanical innovation as lingering weaknesses.
DMZ Mode and Worldwide Launch Schedule
With early access underway for the story mode, attention shifts to the rest of the package. Modern Warfare 4's DMZ mode is scheduled for early access on October 20, 2026, followed by the general worldwide release on October 23, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Whether the campaign's critical reception will carry over to multiplayer and DMZ remains uncertain. Players planning their campaign runs can consult the expected completion times and mission list for details.
