Microsoft internal projections place Project Helix console price between $1,200 and $1,800

Microsoft internally projects a retail price between $1,200 and $1,800 for its next-generation Project Helix console, according to reporting from Fortune. The internal estimate, published in a profile of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, signals a potential break from traditional console business models where manufacturers sell hardware at a loss.

Project Helix, which Microsoft introduced at the Game Developers Conference in March 2026, is engineered to play both Xbox and PC games. The projected $1,200 to $1,800 price reflects unsubsidized manufacturing costs. Microsoft historically absorbed $100 to $200 per console on hardware like the Xbox Series X to lower upfront costs for buyers, but the company has not decided whether it will subsidize Project Helix at retail.

The internal roadmap details a two-stage rollout. Microsoft plans to launch an Xbox gaming handheld by the 2027 holiday season, followed by the Project Helix home console in late 2028. That schedule pushes the flagship console release past previous industry rumors that pointed to a 2027 debut.

Disputes Over Handheld Software and Tightened Timelines

Development across both devices has sparked internal friction. The Xbox and Windows engineering groups clashed over the operating system for the upcoming handheld. Windows leadership pushed for a trimmed-down version of Windows Home, while Xbox executives demanded custom, gaming-oriented software. A senior Xbox executive reportedly threatened to cancel the device before the division secured primary control over the operating system direction.

Hardware schedules have grown tighter. Internal engineering deadlines for Project Helix were moved forward by several months, prompting development teams to use AI tools to accelerate technical workflows. Those pressures arrive amid ongoing corporate restructuring. Microsoft announced plans in July 2026 to eliminate 3,200 positions across the Xbox division, having cut 1,868 roles to date.

Game Pass Restructuring and PC Hardware Parity

Selling a console above $1,200 would shift Microsoft closer to the pricing of high-end gaming PCs than traditional living-room hardware. Alongside the hardware plans, Microsoft is preparing to restructure Xbox Game Pass into an a la carte subscription service. The planned model would offer separate add-ons for console play, cloud gaming, and online multiplayer.

Pending Layoffs and Hardware Questions

Additional staff reductions across Xbox are scheduled for October 2026, November 2026, and January 2027. Several product details also remain unresolved. Microsoft has not confirmed whether the holiday 2027 handheld will be built entirely in-house or produced with an OEM partner, similar to the Asus ROG Xbox Ally. The company also faces the challenge of pursuing Sharma's long-term goal of 1 billion daily active users while potentially asking hardware buyers to pay up to $1,800 for its flagship console.
