Final Fantasy Resonance Struggles to Move Past Its Mobile Gacha Roots
Square Enix remade Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into an HD-2D console RPG, but early impressions indicate the thin story and one-note cast fail to match the upgraded combat presentation.

Final Fantasy Resonance strips the gacha mechanics from the defunct mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, rebuilding the game as an HD-2D console role-playing experience. Square Enix pitched the anthology project as an accessible entry point for newcomers, yet early hands-on play suggests the production still carries the narrative baggage of a mobile spinoff.
Kotaku critic Kenneth Shepard spent roughly 12 hours playing the title in handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch 2, concluding that the game functions best as nostalgic comfort food for fans of 8-bit and 16-bit turn-based combat rather than as a compelling standalone adventure.
Turn-Based Battles and Legacy Visions
Combat relies on a standard four-person party supplemented by Visions, which are manifestations of legacy franchise protagonists such as Final Fantasy VII's Cloud and Final Fantasy XV's Noctis. Equipped as secondary party members, Visions provide distinct skills and abilities during turn-based encounters. Players recruit these characters by completing franchise trivia quizzes and history lessons paired with series footage. While the HD-2D pixel art drew praise during testing, the 3D-rendered cutaways used during Visions' special moves quickly grew repetitive.
Gacha Roots and Paper-Thin Storytelling
The transition away from free-to-play mobile systems left the narrative foundation exposed. Shepard characterized the cast as one-note and described the central plot as feeling like an unpolished first draft. The world serves primarily as a generic backdrop for series fanservice, failing to deliver the depth expected of a mainline entry. The visual overhaul delivers what retro RPG enthusiasts want on a surface level, but the writing in between combat encounters remains barebones.
