Attackers seized control of the official Discord server for Calamity, the popular Terraria modification, using the 250,000-member hub to run a cryptocurrency pump-and-dump scheme.

The breach occurred on October 9, 2026. Attackers sent server-wide pings advertising a token named after the mod before channels across the server were wiped.

Social Engineering Behind the Ownership Transfer

Kotaku reported on October 11, 2026, that the breach was orchestrated by a Discord hacker operating under the handle "Kata," alongside a suspected accomplice or alternate account. Kata has reportedly hijacked dozens of Discord servers over the past two years. The hacker's true identity, physical location, and the exact nature of the secondary account remain unverified.

The takeover relied on deception rather than a platform exploit. Community moderators and the server's former owner stated that attackers impersonated former staff members to convince the owner to hand over full server ownership.

Once in control, the attackers broadcast notifications directing users to buy the newly created token. Kotaku reported that the organizers dumped the token immediately after community members caught on. The total amount of money lost by members who bought into the token remains unconfirmed.

Channel Deletions and Subreddit Warning

As the scheme unfolded, general channels were deleted, creating uncertainty over who cleared the server. A former moderator later stated that while the attackers purged most general channels, the former moderator used overlooked administrative permissions to wipe private announcement and information channels to restrict the attackers' broadcast reach.

Within an hour of the first promotional ping, moderators on the r/CalamityMod subreddit issued an emergency advisory: "If you are in the discord server, LEAVE THE DISCORD SERVER. If you are still in the discord server, DO NOT ENGAGE IN THEIR CRYPTO." The post stated that "the owner of the server was tricked into giving access- hense the compromise."

Preceding Turmoil Inside the Calamity Team

The server takeover follows months of disruption for the Calamity project. On August 10, 2026, the mod's development team issued a joint statement announcing it was "ceasing all development" following allegations of child endangerment and unpaid wages against lead developer Ozzatron. At the time, developers cited "several thousand" dollars in unpaid Patreon earnings among the unresolved disputes.
