EA Producer Details Wing Commander 3 Remaster at Portland Retro Gaming Expo
Electronic Arts producer Jim Vessella revealed plans for a 30th Anniversary Edition of Wing Commander III using recovered studio master tapes.

Electronic Arts is developing a remaster of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger using original studio video tapes discovered in the publisher's archives, producer Jim Vessella confirmed during a panel at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo.
Steve Lin, a board member of the Video Game History Foundation, posted photographs of Vessella's presentation slide to Bluesky on October 11, 2026. Vessella, who previously served as lead producer on EA's Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, explained that an internal project to digitize EA's video archives uncovered the original footage needed to restore the 1994 space combat game.
Master Tapes Recovered from the Company Vault
Origin Systems and director Chris Roberts released Wing Commander III in December 1994. The game merged space dogfights with live-action cinematic sequences starring Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, and John Rhys-Davies. On original multi-disc CD-ROM releases, heavy compression degraded those cutscenes to run on period PC hardware.
Reports from the panel state that Vessella found roughly 600 tapes while cataloging the EA vault. That recovery formed the basis for the project, titled on the presentation slide as 'Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger - 30th Anniversary Edition.' Lin noted that the remaster relies on video sourced directly from those analog studio masters.
Technical Updates and Kilrathi Saga Notes
Vessella's presentation slide listed several technical updates for the project. Planned features include original master full-motion video sequences, upscaled video options, controller support, and gameplay at up to 60 frames per second. The 1994 release ran at much lower frame rates and targeted keyboard and joystick setups.
The slide also listed a Community Enhancement Patch, indicating the project incorporates player-made stability fixes for modern operating systems. Target distribution platforms include Steam, GOG, and the EA app.
The presentation also cited 'Kilrathi Saga integration.' In 1996, EA released Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga, a Windows 95 package containing the first three games and expansions. EA has not confirmed whether the anniversary release will bundle the earlier titles or simply draw on compatibility code established by the 1996 release.
Unannounced Release Dates and Missing Storefronts
The branding contains a clear scheduling discrepancy. Wing Commander III launched on DOS in December 1994, putting its true 30th anniversary in 2024. Vessella's presentation did not explain why the project retained the 30th anniversary title in October 2026.
EA has not issued a formal press release or launched store pages for the remaster. No retail pricing or launch window was shared during the session. Kotaku reported that Vessella told attendees the project is officially in the pipeline, but wider release specifics remain unconfirmed.
